Set design

SET DESIGN

The band set up

For the band set up we pictured something very performance like with the camera moving around the band members.

> we would use colored lights that flash on and off to connote that idea of a concert occurring. Perhaps we could use smoke around the band as well.

> The background for the set up therefore  would be relatively plain- depending on costume I think we could easily have black or white walls as the positioning of the band and the lighting is what will give the shots its depht.

The Narrative set up

For the narrative set up I thought that we could use the TV Studio to recreate a sense of vintage gym- this gym is abstract however and as this music video will be reminiscent of the 70s/80s, I think we could desaturate the Images and really highlight the primary colors to give it a more old fashioned look.

> Therefore I believe that a red brick wall would look traditional- It would give off a tough, street aestetic playing along with the irony of the actions.

> The set up would include gym equipment such as vintage punching bag, boxing gloves, barbells, dumbbells, a balance trainer and so on. We would subsequently show the lead actor tirelessly completting feats of physical exercise using this equipment

The final set up

We wanted to create a sense that the man is entering a children's competition.
We decided on a plain 'homemade' set up.

> A peeling, dirty plaster wall that has a banner and a poster of the competition name- 'Annual Games/ category; under 13's

> small table with chairs that fit the young girl but when the man sits down he looks too big and out of place.

> A bench where the presented are parents are sitting- watching the competition

This one above is not bad but also not the best one because there is only one picture of the band and the rest are just some pictures from the internet.

they could have at least put a costume on because  all of them wear different jackets which does not fit to the hole thing at all. But they wrote a big Thank you part which does reach out to the audience.

Development

After we realized that we couldn't get any further with our other music video idea we decided to choose a new song and create a new idea . we are going to make a 70-80s music video of a band, the cast is above this but the special thing about our music video is that there will be a story and the performance of the band. The story is of a ,,man'' working out which let people think that this will be  for a competition but in the end the competition is just a children hungry hippo competition. He takes it really serious which is meant to make  people laugh when they watch it. Also  the band and everyone else in the music video is meant to act like it is the best song ever and look very serious.

developing idea + cast

Highschool by Sammy rush

We realized that the song we used  was not ideal for our music video because it wasn't a band and we also got stuck in the hole idea because we could not get any further. It was really hard to promote the singer because we did not  get any ideas to make him unique plus the song is clearly American and it is hard to film an American music video in surrey in November.

thats why we decided to use the song   ,,Takin' it'' by  Breathless

After listening to it a lot we choose people who could fit in the genre 80s-90s so this is what we came out with:

Casting

singer: Max Burton

Lead guitar : Oscar boatswain (A1 Dayhouse)

bass:  tommy (A2 Dayhouse)

Drums : Charly (A1 Bwebb)

Keys: Monty Mclaren clark (A1 Bwebb)

working out guy :  Beau Gater (A2 Day house)

little girl : Millie Newman (Lodge A1 )

developing the idea week 3

 Developing the idea

even tho I couldn't attend to the lesson my group pitched our idea to Matt where we emphasized the focus on mental health the artist would be conveying.

The feedback was as follows:

> we should focus on a more abstract way of portraying the narrative rather than a very literal storyline.

>Mental health may be too broad of a subject to devote a music video to.

> Although the theme is broad, it is quite an intimate subject and therefore there isn't a lot of imagery that can be filmed or made for a studio shoot.

> We also need to depict the artist in a more perhaps positive, uplifting light with the music video being about improving mental health rather than simply discussing it.

Rough ideas for set up :

> artist in a dark setting, on a therapy couch playing his guitar

> plane withe background with artist sitting with his back again the wall - a graffiti type collage of musical notes bursting from his heat on the wall behind him. ( because of lyrics ,, if my brain gets any bigger ill be going out of my mind'')

> filming in an actual recording studio perhaps for the last chorus - showing behind the scenes

> artist lying on his back surrounded by multitude of papers - both music notes and marked exam papers

idea developing week 4 part one

 The Cast

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  Artist: Luke  Seymour  (A1 Bwebb)

Sound  Engineer: Monty Mcclarenclark (A1 Bwebb)

  Manager: Doug Francis A1 (Cornhill)

  Therapist: Roy Bickenson

Set ups:

1.  therapist couch  artist sits on it and therapist sitting next him on a stool taking notes

2.  recording studio showing how they record his song

3.  artist sitting on the floor in front of a blank wall playing guitar and singing also he does  graffiti on blank wall ( not at the same time) all of this would show his thoughts and not the ,,real life''

Maby if it is to much with all set ups back up idea to just film in recording studio how they record  the song

Maby animated ,,graffiti'' for the 3rd  set up instead of the artist doing actual graffiti

Workshop 3 1/10/202

,,House lighting''  the normal lights are meant to be there to do house things like cleaning cooking... they aren't there to film anything like a music video

basically this is just the normal light which is everywhere in houses classrooms...

Red hat:

this light is called red hat because it normally is red

In case the red hat blows there is a ,,net'' to  make sure no one gets hurt that's why we have to check the light first and look if there is a net.

to make good lighting with only one light (the red hat ) we have to put the light left next the camera and before turning the light on we have to say ,, eyes closed and sparking '' so the people infant of the camera need to close their eyes because the light is really bright.

the  light travels in a straight line which means the object or  person right in from of the camera is full covered in bright light. To diffuse the light we use trace and put this over the red hat

 ( trace)

The key light gives a few shadows on one side of the persons face who is sitting in front of the camera.

To get rid of these shadows we use a second red hat: Fill light
This is there To light the other side of her face. This needs to be a bit far away from the camera and also on the other side (right side)

Because it looks like the person in front of the camera and the background are kind of connected we use a 3rd light located in the back which is very bright ( if to light need to change the brightness)
This all is called an interview lighting it is mostly just used for interviews etc.

 Beauty Lighting

Only backlight and the polestar to reflect the backlight in the front

This creates a lot ,,dirty lighting''

to get rid of this dirty lighting turn the light down until her face is in focus also use the lens to focus  to hold this focus there is a thing called Matte box which sits on the lens and holds the focused picture( instead of holding it the hole time)

A  HH teacher came up with this idea  it gives the same amount of light through the hole thing but there are still shadows on the other side because it obviously just gives light to the side where it comes from.

Even when someone puts his hand next the persons face who sits in from of the camera the hand bounces light off onto her face ( on the shadow side)

the get light on the side where the shadow is we could use the polestar to mirror the lighting

Fluorescent lights:

u can't make them less bright( if u have to then move the lights around ( far away or closer)
They are naturally all withe to make them colorful there are different colored gel ( when turned on, the light got the color of the gel)

Blue looks brighter than red because of the color

Depending on how u hold the lights u can have a different amount of each colorourd light for example if the red light is farer away and the blue one closer the light in the camera is way more blue

If both lights are right next to each other it makes a weird light lighting.

Kino Flow:

is a light  with many lights in it it is called highlight and the brand is called Photon beard which is a really good and often used brand

Make it to the maximum brightness and expose it by justice the shutter is good for rap metal... in general for things to make it seem brutal.

When the camera is closer to her face the eyes are sparking  because of the reflection of the light .
